My deepest sympaties go out to my cousin Hayat Hawara and her daughter, Jenel and all of Wasfi's family. It's harder to accept such a loss when it came so suddenly and totally unexpected. Dear Fairouzeh Community,

My parents Edsel & Helen Lewis (Nabeha) raised us to be proud of our Fairouzeh, Syria heritage. I have an arabic plaque on my wall til this day that translated means "He who denies his heritage has no heritage!"
The Fairouzeh community has gone far out of it's way to denie it's heritage in America. As my cousin Adib Younan always remind me "there was a Fairouzeh community long before my Uncle Joby was born" and he and many others have made it clear that they don't want future Fairouzeh generations to remember Joby Lewis in any special light. I attended Uncle Joby's funeral and there was no special acknowledgement to him. It was another day! The Fairouzeh community has allowed the accomplishments of this man continue to go unnoticed and unpraised. He is dead, it is not his loss. It is the loss of the Fairouzeh community that will lose this part of their history as time goes on. Ask yourselves this, "What would I have done if I were a multi-millionaire in 1955, owned casinos and thanked God for all of my riches? He helped to build a Church, and Orphanage and an empire that create a wealthy, educated, prosperous community from Fairouzeh, Syria as his way of thanking God. How many of you would have given thanks to God in this manner. Does Fairouzeh denie it's heritage and therefore have no heritage?
