Re: Skitters Wood

I fully agree with them that say we should have well maintained paths in the Skitters Wood, if the school will let them enter from the wood side then the paths should run to that point, have a look at my walk from Downhall Green back to Liverpool Road Click here

Re: Skitters Wood

Had a walk through the wood yesterday afternoon everything is dead looking at this time of the year, come late spring when the trees start to come back to life, the grass and weeds start to take over the ground coverage it will look nice again for us, these are just two new things from last time we was in there,I do think they could do better with the paths

Re: Skitters Wood

Dougie
Thank you for posting these photographs on here - I don't know how to upload the photos.
These images of the benches and the carved eagle have been arranged by our Community Group AFOS (Ashton Friends Of Skitters). I am a member of that group and we apply for grants and do fundraising to pay for these things.
We are trying to get grant aid to pay for the paths but we can't get any.
I hope you like the benches and the eagle.
Did you find the other carving of a Hare & Tortoise? If you did look up to the top of the tree to the left and you will see plaques carved with Values.

Re: Skitters Wood

Do you mean the old tree that's lying on the floor with the carvings on then yes, have you seen my walk I uploaded from Downall Green through the Mill Fields and Skitters Wood to Liverpool Road,
Your not as old as me I know but if you could have seen the Skitts in the 40/50s it was a beautiful place,

In the 50s the school football field was on the other side of Liverpool Road where the new houses are now, we had to run from school down Low Bank Road then across the fields through the wood play football then run back to school for the next lesson,

Dougie.

I well remember the Secondary School football pitch on Liverpool Road, I seem to remember our year being taken down there by, I think Mr Aitken to map out the ground, we had to use calculations and angles to work it out, and then mark out the pitch, it was a long walk,(or run) and when you got there, you were knackered even before the game, however, we were much fitter in those days.

Re: Skitters Wood

My mum is a similar age to you Dougie and she told me all about Skitters in the 50s & 60s
She was the one who told me about the lake there with swans nest on.
If you look on WW I have uploaded a couple of old postcards of Skitters from the 1914 era and Allan Hughes has uploaded some as well. Go on WW in places it is in alphabetical order so scroll down to S and I listed them there under SKITTERS

Re: Skitters Wood

Yes I saw your walk before it was posted on here. So I must've seen it on WW.
