Bridge over River Gairn

Is the bridge, shown on my map, at NJ 317 004, to the East of Stanea, still there? My route calls crossing further to the West at Gairnshiel. I will be coming along the River Gairn.

When I get there I will have one thing on my mind and that is to get to Ballater ASAP for a warm shower and a real meal.

Thanks, William

Re: Bridge over River Gairn

Hi William
If I were you, I'd stay on the track to the North of the river and continue into Ballater. The A939 is a pretty horrible road to drive, I certainly wouldn't want to walk it and if you were to cross that bridge (if it is still there) you would have no real other option. It's quite a nice stroll that way.
Regards
Louise
PS. Please bring nice weather 🤣

Re: Bridge over River Gairn

The road between Bridge of Gairn and Gairnsheil may be closed to traffic. They are going to build a new bridge at Gairnshiel. https://online.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/Apps/roadworks/pdf/11.4.22A939%20Gairnsheil%20Closure%20map.pdf

I would be surprised if the foot bridge wasn't still there, it was late last summer and we haven't had any serious flooding storms over the winter, wind storms yes but not the type of weather that knocks out bridges. There is also a very shallow ford near the bridge that unless the river is very high can be easily crossed on foot.

As Louise says it is possible to stay on the North Eastern side of the Gairn and join the more minor road near Lary, I would stay on the northern track at Dalfad and take the pleasant route through the woods, much nicer than road walking along the A939.
