What steps has your community taken to assess structure ignition risk using the NFPA 1144 system?
Our community has adopted a systematic approach to assess structure ignition risk, closely following the NFPA 1144 scoring methodology to identify vulnerabilities and prioritize mitigation efforts.
🔹 1. Training and Calibration
We started by training our fire prevention and inspection teams on the NFPA 1144 risk assessment criteria, including building materials, defensible space, and topography. Calibration sessions were held to ensure consistency in scoring among different inspectors.
🔹 2. Data Collection & Field Inspections
Teams conduct on-site inspections of homes and structures in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Using the NFPA 1144 checklist, we score each property based on ignition potential factors like roofing material, siding, landscaping, and nearby fuel hazards.
🔹 3. GIS Integration
Collected scores are input into a GIS database, enabling spatial visualization of high-risk neighborhoods. This helps us identify clusters of at-risk properties and plan targeted mitigation campaigns.
🔹 4. Community Prioritization & Outreach
Properties with higher NFPA 1144 ignition risk scores are prioritized for outreach and assistance programs, including providing guidance on defensible space, home hardening techniques, and in some cases, grants for retrofitting.
🔹 5. Periodic Reassessment
To track progress and account for environmental changes, we conduct reassessments every 3-5 years or after significant fire events. This helps us adjust our mitigation strategies accordingly.
