Points set at 0.010" + 0.000 -0.002" in other words no less than .008" nor more
than 0.010" Service Manual indicates same for both Fairbanks Morse and the
Kiekhaefer 4D series. Kiekhaefer (Mercury) introduced their own brand of
4 cylinder magneto in late 1950's as a unit they will interchange but the parts
are different. Be careful of the plastic cap,rotor and cover as they are
not easily found or inexpensive. The timing is draw line between center of
shaft flywheel is mounted on and the center of shaft magneto gear is
mounted on with arrow on magneto gear and timing mark on flywheel aligned
and under the line. So the book seems to say anyhow. I have had magneto
parts and partial magnetos but never had need to assemble one.
You really should consult the manual as there is more to do to get it spot on
and ready to run.
Manual mentions several different rotor and cover sets (apparently improved)
but do not mix...installed as matched sets...different colors. If you have the
original parts and they are good not a problem...something to watch for if
sourcing replacements. Timing belt should be inspected as if original may not
fit to use. Much of the Wizard 4 cylinder is similar to Mercury Mark 30
Several on line dealers should be able to supply parts...be sure to mention
for a Wizard and Magneto model...both Fairbanks Morse and Kiekhaefer magnetos
may have some variations which may/may not make a difference. ASK

We in the life experienced generation are about the only ones who like to figure out and fix up old stuff. Today's task here was to assemble Model A Ford generator. Tomorrow's task is to install and road test. It took a lot of
mental effort to figure out how to do it. Parts locating about as simple as
turning on computer and getting out credit card. I have been fiddling with
outboards for a few years so the taking apart and cleaning part came easy enough but picking up on problems not as easy. As in outboards when cleaned up fixed up,painted and working it is worth the effort.
There are new reprints of Mercury 1965 and Prior Models available from several
on line suppliers and there are moldy oldy greasy dirty copies of variout
vintages "out there" There is also DVD offered on line (ebay) at a very
nominal sum that MAY include desired information...ASK. Put an ad in
webvertize at aomci site and take a look at ebay
Mercury Service Manual part number is C-90-25500.
Since the catalog was written for dealer mechanics in the 1960's to cover no
longer current product you find mention of Mercury Service Tools and the obvious
(to mechanics anyway) left out. Left unmentioned are stuck fasteners and
broken or missing items...fairly new motors did not have the "stuck"
issues and parts were either at parts counter or available in a few days
from distributor.
You may find it helpful to look up Mercury Parts Manual for Mercury Mark 30
online New York AOMCI chapter. Mercury and Wizard versions of same basic
motor were NOT exactly the same but broadly similar.
If there is an active AOMCI chapter in your area see if there is a swap meet
coming up. You may even want to join after looking things over.
