Lower unit gears

I bought a wizard a couple of years ago on-line and it runs but the two gears inside the lower unit are missing model # WG4 Ser# 723426 can anybody tell me where I can find replacement gears?

Re: Lower unit gears

You might try Joe Poole, Jr. He used to have some lower gears for Wizards.

Re: Lower unit gears

I would think that gears from like or similar models of Mercury motors of that era would work. Most Wizzies of that period were just Mercs in different clothes. Joe would know. JW in Dixie

Re: Lower unit gears

Kiekhaefer made 11 cubic inch twins up thru at least
KD4 & WF4 used two piece gear case & water pump housing assembly. Pictures of lower unit on this
site show pretty well what lies within this type.
If your WG4 has same design your source of gears
is any of these Kiekhaefer made twins as they all used
the same 14/19 gear set. If you are missing the
gear set you more than likely are missing the
bronze washer and the (usually) three shims.
There are also high top pinion gears that do not
require the shim or bronze washer.
Examine the bronze bushings in gear case
and water pump housing for wear...if worn only
reasonable solution is another housing.
Gears have to be shimmed so they are neither tight
no too loose...manual gives procedure...wear in
gears and bushings may require compromises.
Parts motors do show up at meets. Webvertize ad
can turn up needed parts as one person's excess
inventory can be another's needed item. There
are still NOS parts turning up too.

Kiekhaefer changed to unicast combined gear case
and water pump housing with KE4...picture on this
site seems to show WG4 had earlier two piece.
It is possible Kiekhaefer used both styles on
WG4 or an intermediate design...
Earlier style two piece assembly is easier to work on.
