Cleaning area rugs

Area rugs, including orientals, cam be cleaned via OP in pretty much the same manner as when cleaning W/W carpeting. However, if you want to improve your results, if possible, turn the rug upside down, and use your upright vacuum cleaner on it. This is not to vacuum up dust & particles from the back of the rug, but to "dust" it: i.e., to let your vac's beater bar or brush roller whack continuously against the underside of the rug. This will force out a lot more dry soil than mere vacuuming alone.
Next, roll the rug out of the way and vac up all of the released dry soil that has come out of the rug fibers onto the floor.
Next, turn the rug right side up, vacuum, and clean in the normal manner.
In in-plant rug cleaning facilities, dusting is done via compressed air, forced thru the back of the rug.
Another way to do this is with the Rugbadger. It is a machine that sells for about $2500, and is intended to be the equal of the in-plant facilities' forced air process.
For smaller area rugs, as well as those which move around too much when using the Challenger, use your stair machine for the cleaning step. It's somewhat slower than using the Challenger, but will still make you good money for your time.
