anyone use bath or hand towels (or turkish towels) instead of buying the expensive pads? they seem like similar material (100% cotton of course).

I think that the pads that come from Challenger are a
90/10 blend of fibers: 90% cotton plus 10% nylon
for added strength. The 10% reduction in absorbent
fibers should't be noticeable. I believe the 2-ply
Argo pads that I prefer are 100% cotton.

Two ply argo pads are long lasting, however you will not get the depth of cleaning with them as you get with single ply pads.

do ya's think the towels/pads/rags i mentioned above would work OK? of course they'd have to be big enough to cover the bottom of the pad driver i realize.

Yes they will work, however you will be finding best as throw aways.
