Ian Shiel

It is with great sadness we pass on news of the death, today, of Ian Shiel.
Ian was very much a hill man and loved the Challenge, completing 21 crossings between 1987 and 2015. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Highlands which he imparted to many as a much respected route vetter. In later years many will have come across him offering refreshments from his motorhome. Others who took on bigger challenges such as LEJOGs, Sue included, would also find him immensely helpful often driving many miles to meet up and offer support in any way he could. He was always a gentleman, kind and thoughtful with a wonderful gentle dry wit. We are both proud to have considered him our friend and grateful for the support he offered us in our role as Coordinators.
Our condolences to his niece Debbie and the rest of his family. We will post details of his funeral once they are known to us.
Thank-you to John Manning for informing us.

Re: Ian Shiel

How really saddened we are to hear of the passing of Ian who we first met early on in our challenge history and for whom we held the greatest respect.
Such a kind, gentle man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of his native Scotland. We have benefitted from his wisdom and generosity of spirit over the years and he was particularly supportive to us during an immensely personal troubling time. We remember him with a deep fondness and send our deepest condolences to his family at this sad time.
