Barrisdale Bay and or Estate

Seeking current information on the present status of camping and or bothy use and or lodging at or near the Barrisdale Estate. Website information appears outdated.

Thank you.

Re: Barrisdale Bay and or Estate

Evening Shaun,

It's a few years since I've been to Barrisdale Bay but I wouldn't imagine that the essential details will have changed much. The bothy is maintained by the estate and available to all-comers at a modest nightly charge. The campsite is adjacent, a fine pitching area in good weather. Facilities, as you'd expect, are minimal and basic. I think that the bothy has a toilet but there is no fireplace. Don't expect to see anyone there as you pass through. There's a keeper's cottage further towards the shore but it wasn't occupied last time I was there. Both bothy and campsite rely on peoples' honesty, with a box in the building in which to leave your payment.

There are no other lodgings available. The house at Ambraigh is a private lodge and although there are a couple of cottages on the way out to Kinlochhourn, these are private holiday homes.

Don't be put off by the lack of facilities. Barrisdale is a magical place whatever the weather.

Colin

Re: Barrisdale Bay and or Estate

I was there last December and all the details Colin has given are correct. It is a popular stop for people walking the Cape Wrath Trail.

Re: Barrisdale Bay and or Estate

Camp site and bothy were both working normally in June last year when I was there.

Re: Barrisdale Bay and or Estate

Hi Shaun.
I was there in late April of this year on my Cape Wrath adventure. I can confirm pretty much what Colin Crawford has said in his post, with the added information that the requested amount is a nightly charge of UK£5, (regardless of whether you camp or stay in the bothy). After arriving at 9pm after a long hard day from Sourlies, I was more than happy to crash out in the bothy. It doesn't have a fireplace, but there is a working toilet, a large kitchen/dining room with a sink that has running water and one electrical plug outlet. It has two dorms with 6 bunk berths in each room. There is also a second toilet to the side of the building. The bothy was clean and dry. One word of warning, if you are planning on walking out from Barrisdale to Kinloch Hourn; don't understimate how difficult it is. Although only 4-5 hours, it is very up and down, and you will feel like you have done a full day's walking by the time you reach Kinloch Hourn. Regards (and Good Luck!), Robert Fay
