Depending on whether or not you can set off for the Challenge a couple or three days earlier you could do as I did with Mick & Gayle, and Alan R a few years ago:

I went Glasgow > Fort Bill on the train, Fort Bill > Kyle of Lochalsh by bus, Kyle of Lochalsh > Strathcarron by train, walk in from Strathcarron, camping part-way.
It made for a very pleasant and quite memorable front-end extension to my Challenge.

Nice idea, but if I was going early John, I'd have gone to Torridon and spent a few days doing the big hills to the NE.

Might do that next July (v. early), as the midges were a bugger in Fisherfields at end of July this year.

That's sounds like a good option.
That particular year I'd spent a few days wandering around the west coast before actually setting off for torridon - as I said, it was a memorable crossing!

I have a taxi that can take up to 8 people on the Thu, from Inverness to Torridon.

The more we get, the cheaper it gets.
