Bioethanol

Until now I have always burnt meths in my stove, normally bought at Screwfix at £3 for a 500ml bottle, but as an experiment I bought a 2l bottle of La Haciena bioethanol.https://www.diy.com/departments/la-hacienda-bio-ethanol-fuel-2l/540224_BQ.prd

It seems to burn cleanly without soot and if anything seems to bloom quicker and bring water to the boil quicker with my Chinese Trangia clone. It also doesn't have the sickly methanol smell of meths.
I assume that this stuff is pretty similar to the specialist fuel marketed by Vango and EkoFuel, but at much lower cost.

Does anyone have any experience of using this kind of alcohol and have they come across any downsides? It certainly works out a lot cheaper.

Re: Bioethanol

Hi Brian, I've been using the B&Q bio-ethanol for years.

There is no way I'd go back to meths.

Bio-ethanol is cheaper than meths and you've outlined the benefits.

I've got nothing detrimental to say about it.

Meth's users - still - are missing out if they don't give it a try - at least.

Re: Bioethanol

Hi Brian,

Used the Vango variation in my Flatcat for a few years, as you say it does all the things meths does without the stink.Downside is the same as all liquid fuels, spills/ leakage and can be a problem to acquire at times.
Hope to see you 2020.

Re: Bioethanol

Well, each to their own. Tho', to reference the, ah, spillage issues, This product could do the biz Sure, I've used ethanol as a last resort, but . . . trundling around a kilo of gubbins was no kind of fun..... This gel baby looks like it could address the issue. (They came for spills but stayed for hills ... )

Also, whilst I can understand those on a budget - do we really care about a two or three pound monetary differential?. Give me a break - dear is cheap, and frankly I'd go with a kosher Trangia myself, hey ho.

Re: Bioethanol

I've been using the B&Q stuff for a few years in both my Trangias, penny stoves, Caldera Cone stove etc.
I rate it highly and use it in preference to meths: it burns cleaner, doesn't pong, and it may even burn more efficiently.
