Re: Gas

Yes, I've picked up gas at Ice Factor before. I phoned them and they always have standard sizes in stock.

Re: Gas

What about gas in Blair Atholl? (For the avoidance of doubt, I am talking about propane/butane in canisters with screwtop fittings!)

Re: Gas

There's a shop on the campsite in Blair Athol (right in centre of the village). Seemed to carry the usual camping essentials when I called in at Easter.

Re: Gas

Give the campsite reception a phonecall. They're very helpful, and their shop is only 50 yards off your probable route.

Re: Gas

Shouldn't be an issue at the shop on the caravan site.
Maybe give them a call to get some put aside.

Aside from that there is a small convenience store near the railway station, not sure if they would have gas in backpacking type canisters.

Re: Gas

Vanessa, I emailed the Blair Atholl Campsite a few weeks ago to ask if they stocked screw-fitting gas cannisters (100/125 or 250 size) in the campsite shop.

The reply I received was as follows:

'We do not sell that type of gas in our shop.
There is a hardware store in Pitlochry which might sell it.
Apologies for the inconvenience.'

Re: Gas

Thanks, John, Brian and Emma. I'm staying there and was talking to them yesterday about sending a parcel, but didn't think to ask about gas. I'll ring again and post the result. It looks as if there's a choice between carrying extra from Fort William to get me to Braemar or getting a bus to Pitlochry and back, neither of which are appealing.

Or a 7 hour drive (3.5 hr each way) down the A9 in the next few days ...

Re: Gas

It's 10 minutes on the train to Pitlochry from Blair Atholl and a nice way to spend an afternoon if you arrive early in BA. The shopping options are significantly better.

I'm astounded!!:open_mouth:

Of course you could be naughty and include a small canister in your parcel or include a handful of esbit cubes and a survival stove.

Brian, please don't suggest that anyone should send any such items by post. They are specifically prohibited by the Post Office for the very good reason that sending them is potentially very dangerous.

Couldn't agree more Emma. Obviously, Vanessa would know and agree with us, but other less experienced Challengers may not understand the risks.

Fair enough, wrist sore from being smacked.
