Re: Train Tickets

William,
Tickets are available three months in advance - so mid Februaryis the time to look (i’ve Not used the sleeper train - I think it may be different).
It’s often three or four days after they become available that they get to be cheapest.

Re: Train Tickets

Hi William

You are correct about the timing (about 12 weeks in advance) and the potential savings of using split tickets.

Deciding whether split ticketing and/or changes of train en route are economical can be difficult and tiresome. However, there is a neat little website that can help - click the link below:

TRAINSPLIT.COM

Just enter your start and end stations, date & time and this gizmo will do the work for you, delivering three or four options, and highlighting the cheapest fare. Hover your mouse over the fare prices to reveal the number of changes and total journey time.

Clicking the "proceed" button brings up a page showing each stage of the journey, waiting times at any changes and duration of each stage - with an option to search again if you don't like it.

Handy little tool. I just tried it for a ticket from Euston (or Kings Cross) to Oban in March, and with a couple of changes the price dropped from £127.50 to £75.00, a saving of £52.50, or 41%

Re: Train Tickets

Excellent. Bookmarked that.

Re: Train Tickets

Brilliant...thanks Phil!

I've downloaded the app.

Re: Train Tickets

Thanks to all. I will be arriving in Oban on the Wednesday evening and will spend 2 nights before the start.

After a long plane and train journey I need the extra rest before another crossing.

Re: Train Tickets

Hi William
You could split the tickets yourself by checking out the route details (I do this through the National Rail Enquiries website) and choosing a station your train stops at, buy a ticket to there then another ticket to complete that leg. Sometimes you even can stay on the same train although not on this occasion.
I've tried this for London Euston to Oban for Thurs 21st March so it can be compared to Phil's example and come up with the following.

London Euston 06.24 to Crewe 09.34 cost £9.00
Crewe 10.09 to Glasgow Central 13.15 cost £13.00
Glasgow Queens 16.36 to Oban 19.43 cost £10.50

Total cost of £32.50 a much better saving than the ticket splitting sites.
With this journey you obviously have a long stop over in Glasgow giving you time to socialise with the gathering hoards of Challengers.

Cheers
Chris
