Groceries in Inverness

Coming in from the US and we're planning to bring some food with us, but fill out our meat/dairy needs during our stopover day in Inverness. What Inverness grocery will give us the best odds of finding everything we need in a single stop? Looks like there's a Tesco superstore about 10 min by bus from the rail station...good place to target? Obviously would prefer not to have to aimlessly wander around town looking for groceries. So we need a plan not too complicated for jetlag-addled brains in a foreign land. We'll be looking for things such as cheese sticks, meat sticks/products, Nido (dehydrated/fortified milk), maybe nuts/fruits, etc.

We'll also need to buy fuel canisters, but I assume we'll have to go elsewhere for those. Suggestions for that?

Thanks, looking forward to beginning the journey in a month's time.

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Hi Kent,

There is a Morrisons store just round the corner from the train station where you will manage to get all your groceries.
Its just a couple of minutes walk from train station.

Gas supplies can be bought from Craigdon Mountain Sports on Academy Street- which again is only a couple of minutes walk at the most from the train station.

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Kent, Tesco would be a good one stop for your food items or just across from the train station there is a Morrisons Food supermarket. I cant comment which store would stock Nido but both should have other brands of dehydrated milk. For your gas or any of the dehydrated packet meals there is Craigdon Mountain sports just 2 mins from the bus station address below:- or if you fancy a 10 mins walk, back along the A82 there is a Tiso both stores would cater for any outdoor supplies.

Craigdon Mountain sports- 78 Academy St, Inverness, Highland IV1 1LU, UK
Tiso - 2 Henderson Road Longman Estate Inverness IV1 1SN

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Be aware that we only found gas at Tiso, and it only opens from 9am.
Neither M&S nor Morrisons sell gas (anymore).

Re: Groceries in Inverness

In Inverness, Craigdon Mountain Sports is just about 100m around the corner from the bus station, or a few hundred metres up the road from the train station (turn right as you exit onto the road) - has gas.
Blacks across the road from the station and along a bit, - has gas.
Before you get as far as Tiso is Cotswold, - has gas.
All within walking distance. Ask Google Maps if noone can give you directions.

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Kent,

I’ve no experience of the Inverness Tesco, but neither of the Tesco superstores near me seem to stock dehydrated milk though they have coffee whitener. Morrison’s online store has Nido and their own brand dehydrated milk - may be a better bet?

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Just to be ultra-controversial, my local Tesco has various forms of dehydrated milk and Nido. Good luck!

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Somtimes I worry about these new challengers!!!!! Song comes to mind, Take my Hand!!!!!😂😂😂

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Sorry to worry you, Terry, and I do hope you'll be able to sleep through all the worry over us. Then again, if not for newbies like us I don't know how you'd occupy your online time or find an outlet for all your vast experience. So.. you're welcome! :kissing_smiling_eyes:

Putting Terry's eminently helpful input aside, thanks everyone for the info!

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Kent,
as a fellow American and being our third time across, our friends across the pond have a very unique and biting sense of humor. We have found them all to be splendid people that will actually help in anyway possible. You will have a fine time. To ease your mind we have actually resupplied in Inverness and there are two shops mentioned both easily accessible from the train station and a fantastic fish and chip take out just a block away as well. If you need any info from someone that speaks American, just give me a shout.

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Sometimes I worry about people with short memories..... chill out, Terry, this man is coming a long way to a strange country. If you can’t be friendly and accommodating just say nothing.

Remember, have a great challenge...

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Hi All ,
Just to put a bit of perspective in , Terry ( it must be Terry L.) is a whole lot of a legend . I first met him in " Shielin o' Mark" on my first challenge 2006 . He came in early evening and spotted my 1/2 pint paraffin optimus roaring away and quickly shouted his son and said " this is one of those stoves l was telling you about!" , and followed it with," anyone got any coffee" . I was able to oblige. I was on my first challenge with a 50 pound pack and a blister on the sole of each heal, i made it to the finish and have remembered the encounter ever since , he is the salt of the earth as they say !.
Now that i am furnished with a Pacemaker i might consider having another go ( a 7th) in the hope of bumping into him . I am now stuck trying to discover the meaning of a "valid URL !!!!! .

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Well, William.

The sum of your character reference for our Terry is that he recognised a Primus and ponced a coffee.

I think you need to do better than that.

However I believe our 'foreign' visitor has already realised that the vast majority of Challengers are a thoroughly decent sort.

It's not really good form to protect the guilty party, but you do of course have form.

Re: Groceries in Inverness

No problem at all, folks. I see now that I overreacted to Terry's lighthearted post. The fault is mine, and I look forward to raising a pint (and walking) with you all soon!

Re: Groceries in Inverness

That's the spirit Kent . Concentrate on enjoying yourself and looking after your feet . I now have to try and pass the URL stage , still don't know what it means .

Re: Groceries in Inverness

What exactly is your "URL" issue William?

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Hi Kent, no the fault was mine , I was just being a bit Churlish , I'm also in Inverness that morning so if we meet it a large dram for us,,

Re: Groceries in Inverness

Thank you for asking this, I am coming from the US as well and was wondering about where to get groceries. I dreamed last night I started out and had not packed food. :relaxed:
