Caldera Cone question

So I am planning on bringing my Caldera Cone Sidewinder for my first TGO. Any sidewinder or other CC users have and plan on bringing a wood burning Inferno insert? I was planning on leaving mine behind even with a somewhat low level route planned. Any reason I should reconsider? It's only a couple of ounces but still a way to shave weight.

Re: Caldera Cone question

Hi Phil,

I've got a sidewinder - without the inferno insert.

Sounds a good idea, but, I wouldn't. It is scotland; the chances of getting dry wood to burn will vary. Plus, the soot from wood burning is a pain.

I've played with wood burning stoves, but, not felt comfortable to carry the extra weight for what could be hit and miss getting enough wood. :grinning:

Re: Caldera Cone question

Thanks Gordon. That's what I assumed and planned to leave it behind but thought it was worth checking. Wanted to make sure my childhood memories of many dreich days in a row were what I should plan on...

Re: Caldera Cone question

I have one as well but there is almost no wood available on the TGO. It is a windy journey often so I have moved to a MSR Windburner. It was superb hiking around Japan and the fuel savings in wind are significant which ofsets the added 100 grams or so. I used to use meths but there are various reports of experienced hikers getting burned due to it. The difficulty is to know how much fuel to bring but I am always ready to have a no cook meal if needed. Cheers from Canada
