Wild camping - Glen of Drumtochty

Does anyone know if finding somewhere to camp in the Glen of Drumtochty is realistic (aiming for a Johnshaven finish). I wondered about somewhere around NO 691797.

Ian

Re: Wild camping - Glen of Drumtochty

There isn't a lot of flat land around those parts Ian but there are possibilities. As long as you don't mind the public location there is a forestry commission parking area which has flat grassy land and picnic tables at NO 69699 79852, there used to be a toilet block there at one time but it was removed. There is a wee burn running next to the site. I've seen folks parking a camper van there recently, but not a tent. https://tinyurl.com/ycbqg37s

There is a path running along the north side of the burn back towards the west which can also be accessed from a gate and parking area at NO 68665 79559. Halfway along this path it goes through a more open grassy area where you could pitch. Are you going to be coming down the glen along the road from Clatterin' Bridge? There are a few other potential areas that you might fancy if you want to stay away from the road but they will all mean a bit of a detour up the hillside into the forest. If you're interested I can give you some details.

You could also contact the castle, it is really a big house that concentrates on wedding receptions, there is a pretty interesting church in the glen near the castle. They could probably offer you a pitch in the castle grounds if you ask nicely. http://www.drumtochtycastle.com/Contact.php

Re: Wild camping - Glen of Drumtochty

If you don't mind stopping just before you get down to Glen of Drumochty I can recommend a comfortable pitch on the Black Burn of Arnbarrow at NO 641 787. Flat, sheltered, good water.

Re: Wild camping - Glen of Drumtochty

Funny coincidence Janet, I have just sent an e-mail to Ian saying just the same thing. I was up there yesterday and I've always thought that would be a great area for a pitch, with the benefit of the café being a short hop away for a breakfast stop. It is a great little track up there and one that I regularly use for walking the dog for a couple of hours. My personal recommendation for a wild pitch however would be the wee side glen around NO 625 791. There are some excellent little flat grassy areas up there next to a wee tumbling burn of crystal clear water.
