Interpreting and pronouncing Gaelic place names

We have quite a few Challengers who speak Gaelic, but for those of us who do not, here's a handy Scottish National Heritage document that can help enormously. As pointed out before on here (HMP3 & John Donohoe, I think) the Gaelic names, however mangled on the OS maps, can give you an idea of the landscape you'll be encountering. It also helps with pronunciation.

Excellent! And for a comprehensive look at not only Scots Gaelic but also Scots, Cumbric and Norse names throughout the entire country then Peter Drummond's splendid Scottish Hill Names: Their origin and meaning is worth every penny and makes for fascinating reading. Click here to take a look

All excellent resources. For hills, the website Walkhighlands has a button you can press for a recording for the pronunciation and an interpretation of the name.

I have also just bought an excellent second-hand copy of John Murray's Reading the Gaelic Landscape, which I hope will help me to appreciate Gaelic place names - after all, they are a fascinating part of our heritage.

The Ordnance Survey has a first-class resource page covering Scots Gaelic place names- Click here to take a look

The section includes a map showing the extent of Gaelic orthography - which covers a large portion of the Challenge area. Click here to download this map as a PDF
