Re: Snow & Midges

There could be some snow lying on some tops, but as far as I know (check with Chris Townsend), there is not much, and this week it is going to be warm in Scotland followed by some rain Fri to Sun.
The weather has been mild, so you could well encounter midges on lower routes.
Best to pack some insect repellent & maybe a lightweight midge hat.
I always do, although May is early for midges, especially if you have a higher route in mind.

More importantly though..............

TICKS have already been seen.
These are nasty wee buggers.

A tick puller, and some sort of clothing treatment like Permethrin on cuffs, sock tops and waistband could be useful (although not essential).
I have treated mine today, as a precaution.

Someone more knowledgeable may be along shortly to contradict or correct me.

Re: Snow & Midges

I've pulled 3 ticks off my dog this week. Admittedly she is a tick magnet spending her time running through heather and undergrowth but they are definitely about and feeding.

Re: Snow & Midges

Mark,

You have got to read Alan Sloman's post from last year on ticks. Search for 'Cautionary Tales, Part 1: The Tick Bite' on this message board, posted 19 Apr 16. Hilarious and informative in equal measure, so well worth a read!

Re: Snow & Midges

Bad news, folks, the midges are coming.
see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-39858858/scotland-set-for-21-billion-biting-midges
Think I might squeeze my midge net and some Smidge in the pack.

Re: Snow & Midges

Liz and I camped at Inverie last week after a lovely trip through from Cluanie Inn. I came home with several midge bites. As usual, Liz had none. That's why she takes me along with her; the little horrors eat me and leave her alone.
Have a great Challenge everyone, I'll be thinking about you.
