Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

Tristan, Welcome to the Challenge.

I've not seen your route, so I don't know how demanding it will be under foot and if boots would be advisable, but I've done most of my crossings in trail shoes which are probably vegan. I would suggest that you wear whatever you normally wear for walking as you've already proven that it's comfortable. The TGO Challenge is not the best time to be experimenting with new footwear.

As for food, you should be able to buy plain rice and pasta in most grocery shops. You'll probably be able to buy tinned or carton tomatoes (or fresh) and nuts and dried fruit. You'll be able to cobble something together but I'd guess your choice will be limited.

I've never sent a re-supply parcel but I know that these can be very helpful for Challengers with special dietary needs like yourself. The choice in small village shops will be very limited so it may be a good idea to send yourself some parcels containing prepared meals or at least a suitable dietary supplement to make sure you get the nutrients you need.

One other point - when you post on the message board it's a good idea to enter an email address (at the top underneath your name) as some Challengers are shy and don't like to post in public but will send you some helpful tips via email.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

My apologies for a snappy response before...I was under the impression this was a wind-up!!!

I mentioned the chips as I know from many years of having a 'difficult' diet that chips are often the only thing I can eat from a menu!!

The boots and gear worry me. What kind of equipment have you used so far? You must have done some walking and camping to have been able to join the Challenge? And even if not a great deal there's all the training............

Highly possible to dehydrate your own food. I notice Lakeland are selling one now at a reasonable price.

I imagine you will be able to get some basics (as Judith mentions) - nuts, and vegetables, oats and dried fruit, rice and couscous. The rest you will have to carry or send ahead.

Good luck.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

Hi,Thank you for some fantastic advice much helpful, I'm new to this kind walking as I've never done anything like this before,
My usual walking is just to take poppy my little dog out around park (training) but I do manage 2to3 miles though, I'm so excited about doing the challenge.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

Can't work out if all of this thread is serious but it would help those like me who have the occasional humour by-pass if posters did what they are asked to do by the administrators ie use their real (full?) names. Then we can judge more accurately the seriousness of the question posed and the answers given.

Must go now. I have to be sanctimonious elsewhere.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

I'm not sure if Triston/Tristan is a troll, either, but there's no harm in trying to be helpful. I just hope he understands that the TGO Challenge is more than a mere stroll in the park .... although a stroll to The Park usually indicates a successful crossing.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

£10 says this is a windup! The last response re walking the dog round the park sealed it for me.

One of the disadvantages of an open forum without any kind of preregistration

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

Not to mention changing the spelling of his own name.
Triston...Tristan...
Still, could be genuine

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

There - I've owned up...although there were two rather obvious clues...and I am a fully committed veggie...

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

Hi,Sorry that's my dyslexia again,(typo error)I'm just trying to find out the best way how to do this walk,It's just the same thing
If you cannot spell someone always pulls you up about it.!!!
Well I guess Poppy and I will just keep on trading together!! I mite just take her with me she's only little.

Re: Lactose Free and Vegan food,

You might wish to read the Challenge rules again before making a final decision on Poppy ...
