Have pity, folks. I had no idea there could be as many as 72 places on the standby list. I got in once from 29, but this year I think I would have to send you all a poisoned bottle of malt to secure a place.

I'm on the standby list as well.....at number 63. Maybe 2017 is the year to do the Cape Wrath Trail.

It sounds like there are quite a few of us "addicts" queuing this year, so lets hope there is plenty of movement in the list. I'm preparing a route in hope anyway. Like you, Paul, I'm thinking about the CWT if I'm unlucky.

I think we might see quite a bit of movement on the stand by list this year because people have not had to pay anything up front. Even if you are quite far down the list I wouldn't despair, at least not yet. It's probably worth getting a route worked out and if the worst comes to the worst you can always use it in 2018.

In 2013 I was number 69 on the list so I did the Cape Wrath Trail (dare I say it) it was a bonus. A great expedition.

Commiserations to those who did not get a place but it may be too soon to despair.

Once reality sets in due to having to cough up the entry fee some may withdraw.

I'm either doing the Cape Wrath Trail (north to south) or Cape Wrath to South Foreland, in which case I'll probably skip the prettier bits of the CWT to get south quicker. It all depends how much time I can wangle away from home!

In 2009 I got in from number 60 on the standby list. But that does not mean that 60 people from the standby list got in ... it means that a lot of people with higher numbers on the standby list drop out. I believe that two or three more got in after me, including the person who had started at number 87.

Much to be said for perseverence ...
