Re: Where on Earth???

Stein,Waternish,Skye,seems a good candidate.

Re: Where on Earth???

Donovan's commune was at Stein, on the Waternish peninsular NG 261 571. But the house looks nothing like the one in the watercolour, and the topography in the artwork doesn't map to the landscape. Nice piece of work - looks to me like the artist has been influenced by Paul Nash.

Re: Where on Earth???

Allo, allo, allo! Wot's these ere heaps of white powder doing on your drive, then, Mr. Lambert? Road salt, then?

Re: Where on Earth???

Thanks for the responses, chaps!

The artist is (or was) a Roy Clements who I believe comes from East Anglia, as the very few other pictures by him in our local junk shop, sorry, 'Antiques Centre', were of very recognisable places in Suffolk & Norfolk ... which makes this picture a bit of a mystery.

As his other pictures were all of places that exist, I very much doubt that this one is a flight of fancy. I followed the Donovan trail, but it's definitely not that. I suspect that this place is located off the public road, possibly on an estate or farm.

Ah well, at least I now have an excuse for a holiday on Skye

Re: Where on Earth???

I have to agree with Hump3. I was virtually driving on and flying above Skye yesterday and there's no building that fits the church and landscape together. Google pictures show some churches on Skye but the distinctive belltower is nowhere to be found. The Inn at Waternish peninsula seems popular though.

Re: Where on Earth???

Brigadoon, for certain.
