Clova Hotel to Water of Saughs.

In view of all the electric fences that have gone up in the Clova area, I wondered whether you can still get over to Saughs from Clova Hotel. My planned route goes up to Loch Brandy, then across east and down to Water of Saughs to camp near the West Water/Saughs confluence. Has anyone done this recently? We managed to get along the tops on a Challenge a few years ago, pushed off here and there by the new fences, descending by Nathro Lodge to Bridgend, but I have never been down to the Saughs and Glen Lethnot. Any advice welcome! Thanks. 'Merrylegs.'

Re: Clova Hotel to Water of Saughs.

Hi Marian - in 2009 I went from Clova down the road then via the path over Ben Tirran and The Goet. Descended over Black Shank to the Shieling of Saughs where I camped. There were electric fences but nothing that caused a problem to my little legs. Black Shank is like walking on a mattress as the ground appears to float on water, quite odd!

Re: Clova Hotel to Water of Saughs.

Hi Marian
I did this route a few years back in a bit of a mist. It's very do-able but i did find the fences threw my navigaion off from time to time. It was never very clear where the next crossing point was going to be, just where and for what distance the fence would meander, and therefore which side of the fence was optimum to walk.
It was a bit frustrating and i had to keep checking the compass. It took me longer than expected.
On a clear day it would be much easier and a lovely route.
