Re: Up-to-date wind farm map for the whole of Scotland

This is indeed A Horror. And thank you Alan for getting this all out into public domain.

Amongst the shocking reveals is the extent to which Southern Scotland - defined as Dumfries/Galloway/Scottish Borders - is being set up for an even greater desecration than The Highlands per se.

I live in The Borders, and for many years now we've been The Forgotten Sister. Together with our brothers to the west we've been trying hard to attract tourists - the vast majority of whom currently move straight on through to Edinburgh, The Highlands and Inverness and the mighty parts beyond.

We have a gentle landscape with a particular charm.

Looking at the map one can immediately see that the potential wind factories in our region far outway - on an area and density basis - those in the Highlands. The major blighted region is Dumfries and Galloway. These parts probably doesn't even register for the majority of Challengers - but I would urge you all to take up your pens! I understand that The Mrs O are taking a stravaig through this region next week, and no doubt can come back with salient comments!

Scottish Borders Council, together with Dumfries and Galloway, understand this issue, and are now doing their very best to stall applications. But, like Highlands and Islands, they are faced with egregious legal fees to contest these applications, with always the de facto reality that applications will simply be moved up to Hollyrood toward an urban politic that has no interest whatsoever in our greatest asset. Our landscape.

Of our country's 5m folk some 3.5m live and vote in the central industrialized zone - which is a narrow band stretching from Edinburgh to Glasgow and a mere 30km in depth. And that's where the votes lie, babes.

Sure I know that on this message board we're preaching to the (mainly) converted. As you know all full well, if factories such as these were mooted on, say, The Howgills, Stanage Edge or The Malverns there'd be on outcry from Middle England.

Take a look at Alan's map. And make your voices heard!

Re: Up-to-date wind farm map for the whole of Scotland

I have now posted an updated map to show the wind farms more clearly and also to show the areas designated by the Scottish Government as "wild land" - areas to be given 'strengthened protection against development' (which in practice seems to mean sod-all).

I have also supplied a link so the full resolution map can be downloaded and blown up to your heart's desire.

I see that visitscotland.com is promoting bus tours to the Whitelee Windfarm Visitor Centre
for ‘A fantastic ‘FREE’ family day out.' Clearly fantastic is a versatile adjective!

They like them & probably believe they enhance the landscape.
Delusional.
But.. Where do Visit Scotland get their funding from? Hmmm?

Re: Up-to-date wind farm map for the whole of Scotland

Aside from the possible movement of legal tender in various - some might say - spurious directions, I don't envy the visitscotland.com employee given the task of marketing a once beautiful now disfigured landscape.

It may not represent the whole of Scotland, but highly relevant to anyone doing TGOC, http://www.cawt.co.uk/index.php?page=map

Lots of other resources on the industrialisation of the Scottish landscape..
