Re: HEET (fuel) alternative in UK.

Methylated Spirits ("meths") is probably what you want.

You should be able to find it in most hardware stores and some outdoors shops, usually in a 500ml plastic bottle. Not sure if chemists sell it any more?

Guess you should be able to find some easily in Inverness if you're passing through there while the shops are open.

Re: HEET (fuel) alternative in UK.

Hi Mathew,
This sounds like our methylated spirits ie methyl alcohol, sold with added purple dye to dissuade casual drinkers. It's not widely available nowadays, pharmacies and outdoor shops are the most likely vendors. That would suggest the larger settlements, Glasgow, Oban, Fort William, Aviemore, Kingussie, and Braemar. Trangia spirit stove fans might know of more outlets.

Re: HEET (fuel) alternative in UK.

Meths (ethenol/ methanol) is widely available in Hareware stores, you may also find Bio-ethanol in a few oulets.

Yet is it not the case that many Challengers have purple-stained livers? Must be something in the PEET

Re: HEET (fuel) alternative in UK.

Thanks for the heads up! We picked up some from a hardware store in Glasglow. In Plockton eagerly awaiting the morning.

Re: HEET (fuel) alternative in UK.

Matt: what you need are called "meths" often. You should be able to get it easily in any hardware store.
I don't understand why you need any heat since you will be perfectly warm in your Zpacks tents. You will be perfectly dry in your Zpacks rain jackets and gloves, and you will sleep well in ---- well you get the idea.
Have a spectacular journey.
I am off to hike for the weekend in the rain this weekend.
