SPOT trackers, PLBs, and other on-the-hoof software

Further to the post below,

Anyone carrying any kind of electronic locator or satellite/phone-based tracking device on this year's Challenge might like to add their trail to the map at

http://www.shareyouradventure.com/map/48295/socialhiking/TGO-Challenge-2014-unofficial

Full instructions are linked from that page and site whiz Phil Sorrell will assist if you're really stuck – just use the support contact button there.

Many thanks indeed to Phil… this could well be the way forward for future years' recreational tracking!

Note that this kind of procedure is not a formal part of our monitoring/safety system. The phone calls are still the proper way to check in and let us know you're okay. If you don't call in, and your tracking device show's you're still on the move, we'll assume you've either left it on a bus and it's still transmitting, or that you've been mugged and your device stolen (or that you're cheating!).

I'm no techno so apologies now if the above is mis-phrased… I hope that those sufficiently conversant with such devices will make sense of it though!

Re: SPOT trackers, PLBs, and other on-the-hoof software

Please note that if you use a pseudonym on the mapping site you will be, to all intents and purposes, invisible to us!

The anonymity of the internet is great until you get lost!

Re: SPOT trackers, PLBs, and other on-the-hoof software

Can anyone recommend a suitable tracking phone app?

Many questions flying round in my head such as can it be turned on/off as you need it? What is the battery drain like? Will it send an update when you turn the phone on (wasn't planning on keeping the phone turned on)?

There's probably more but that'll do for now

Re: SPOT trackers, PLBs, and other on-the-hoof software

I can recommend an app if you have access to OS maps or memorymap QCT format.
E-mail me for info.
