f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

Joy -

I just saw your post a while back about Rannoch Moor, and whether there were any accounts of the crossing.

This link should take you to the account in my blog of my crossing from King's House to Rannoch Station in 2010. It's fairly terse, I'm afraid:

http://tworoutes.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/2010-challenge-day-6-kings-house-to_4454.html

Unless things have changed since 2010, the King's House has a "wild camping area" at the back where you are welcome to pitch your tent, and then enjoy the hotel bar etc. They will also serve breakfasts to people from the wild camping area, on a "standby basis" - i..e hotel guests take priority, but if they have spare capacity then you are welcome to buy your breakfast from them.

They ALSO came to my rescue as I was worrying that my mobile phone battery was running low. They have a collection of "lost property" mobile phone chargers left by guests, and they were happy for me to find the one which fitted my phone, and plug it in to recharge at their expense.

King's House very welcoming :D

Re: f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

I see the King's House Hotel is for sale. I guess that won't affect the continuity of the business, but worth checking if you are relying on it.

Re: f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

Thanks very much Jeremy for the link. I'm still dithering about this section of the crossing. Mind you I have a few months to dither before November. I'll know more after I've read your piece.
Thanks for the info Robin. Let's hope the hotel resumes its Challenge service under any new management.

edit;- I've just typed the link in but can't get the page

If you google "Two Routes Across Scotland" it should be your top hit.

Have a look at the 2010 Crossing, day 6

Re: f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for sharing details and pictures of your 2010 route.

I'll be starting from Kilchoan and following a similar route through Glen Raannoch and ultimately heading for Dunnottar Castle. Great to read about and see potential overnight stops.

I'm sure our routes may cross at some point.

Cross at some point?

I suspect we'll be enjoying a uisge beatha or three together before we even set off. I'm starting from Kilchoan this year, too.

We'll be going off in different directions, though. I'll be heading south on day 1.

Re: f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

I enjoyed reading about your 2010 crossing, Jeremy

Glad you liked it, Robin.

I hope you enjoy my accounts of 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 just as much

Re: f.a.o. Joy - Rannoch Moor

Got it now Jeremy, thanks.
Such an interesting read of all those other routes too. Lots of ideas to incorporate into possible future crossings.
So - Rannoch Moor - not a dangerous wallow then for a solo walker?

Well ... I wouldn't seek to dissuade you from carrying a coracle ...
