Re: Monar Lodge camping

I've been that way, and the going ain't that great! I take it that you're planning to cut up N from Bendronaig Lodge and then move E from about half-way up Loch an Laoigh?

This is very wet and unpleasant ground heading E. Once you gain Loch Morar after the Bealach an Sgoltaidh you're faced with an hour or so of difficult terrain (specifically steep northern inclines into the loch) before picking up the nominal track. There is a relatively good campsite at NH 161 425.

Frankly I'd rather put up with the horrid morass that leads from Loch Colavie to Pait Lodge and then bushwack N of Meallan Buidhe to pick up the track that leads ENE to Inchvuilt. But hey, it's your call, que no?

A couple of years ago I pitched at NH 122 386, which was a comfortable day from Strathcarron.

Looking forward to meeting with you in Montrose, if not before.

Re: Monar Lodge camping

Thanks Humphrey.

I'm starting from Torridon: planning to follow the R Meig to cross over and go south by Allt an Amise > Allt a' Choire Ffionnaraich > E along N shore of Loch Monar > to camp in the area before Monar Lodge.

Your suggestion of camping around NH161425 sounds good although I'll probably camp on the E side of the burn....assuming it's 'campable'!

Re: Monar Lodge camping

Sent you an email fella, or was that a phone call?
OK, it was a phone call.

Re: Monar Lodge camping

Better get your tent pitched early JJ as you won't be alone on that route!

Re: Monar Lodge camping

John,

My notes recall me being quite anxious when I went that way. The weather was awful and I'd been warned there were few pitches on the N shore of Loch Monar so I was cold, tired and wet with no guarantee of a decent pitch. I pushed on past the lodge (past two drenched Challengers pitching their tents on a patch of compacted gravel!) and ended up pitching at NH217391. My blog says it was "reasonable-ish" but I don't remember too much about it; it had been an awfully wet day (2011).

I know you don't want to push on that far but you could bear it in mind.

Re: Monar Lodge camping

On TGOC 2012 we camped near the weir at NH221390 on a nice flat grassy bit near the river. Unfortunately that was in the 'Great Storm' and the river rose alarmingly in the night. We began to wish we'd camped higher up. Pat went out at 3a.m. into the rain and gale and reported that we were now on an island, but that the river still had 2ft or so to go before sweeping away the tent. We decided to stay put. In the morning the rain had eased and the river had dropped quite a bit.

Really? That's my worst fear when I'm camping near a river.... I don't think I would have slept at all that night! You must have been so relieved when it was morning! Sounds like you were lucky!

Re: Monar Lodge camping

Thanks for all your help folks, I'm pretty sorted on this section now.

Re: Monar Lodge camping

John.If I might suggest an alternative to your proposed route. This route I have walked four or five times in either direction.
It has the benefits of easier walking, fewer boggy stretches and numerous pitches too.The distance is much the same but this is faster alternative I have used through to Torridon, many times with slight diversions now and again.
Picking up from your route at NH 074 467 Head S along the FP.over Bealach Bhearnais down to the track junctions at NH 018 392. If it's bad a quick divert to Benronaig Lodge will find you shelter. However head E to Glen Luinaig S of Loch Monar.Sheiling at NH 062 383 offers a pitch. Carry on to Pait Lodge
NH122 397 , pitch possible at NH122 385 on past the small power station to
Inchvuilt NH229 386. Rejoin your route here to wherever. Navigation or route
finding is no problem, certainly no burn jumping. Cheers.
