No pictures of that spot on Geograph (or goggles) but their map states it's a ford. Wet feet unavoidable I suppose.

I don't think there ever was a bridge here. Because there is a dam control on water levels in the river it can rise and fall at short notice. If low you can get across the weir. If not, embrace the tarmac thrill.
