Yes, but a pole would be unreliable.

A better way would be to knock up a bit of kit at home before you leave:

Solder a crocodile clip to one end of a piece of wire and a tent-peg to the other.

In use: FIRST shove tent peg into the ground close to the fence.If you find a damp bit of ground, all the better...although you can always dampen it yourself if you're VERY careful!

Only then should you connect the croc clip to the electrified bit.

This will earth (short out) those pesky volts.

You can buy electric fence detectors, a bit of kit, that when held next to an electric fence will indicate whether it's live or not.

Alternatively you can use your radio as a detector. The high voltage pulses can be detected as an audible 'click'. Not brilliant with an FM radio, MUCH better using an AM radio (MW / LW).
