And keep in mind that the earth's polarity reverses on average every 450,000 years and the latest reversal was 780,000 years ago. So we are overdue a change. See Here

I had this happen to me the Picos last year. The culprit was the oh-so-snappy Osprey Hydraform reservoir. The drinking tube clips to the chest strap on the rucksack with a nice ultra strong ... MAGNET!

Not the most sensible thing when your compass resides in a pouch on the rucksack shoulder strap.

Fortunately I realised that even in Spain the sun seldom rises in the West.

Unfortunately it was couple of miles before this realisation, er, "dawned".
