Your thoughts on spikes for 3 season boots

I generally steer clear of icy conditions, but am heading up to Scotland to recce some of my route next week. With the current amount of white stuff on the ground I wonder if having a pair of Kahtoola microspikes or Pogu spikes might be a good idea? I am not going high, but may encounter icy paths or drifts. Would the aforesaid pointy things be useful or deadweight? If I do bite the bullet and buy a pair, what are the pros and cons of the two types of spikes, and is there any other product that could be recommended? (I have an elderly pair of Yaktracks that need retiring - held together with wire now!)

Lindy, I was up on the North Morar ridge playing 3 weeks ago. I packed a pair of Yaktrax XTR's and very glad I did. Wore them on a pair of Salomon fastpackers mids and they worked a treat. Go outdoors have them for £30 .

There is also an interesting review of them Here

Re: Your thoughts on spikes for 3 season boots

I find Kahtoola microspikes excellent and have used them for 3 years. This winter they have been ideal for grip on iced snow deposits on a number of hills where kicking in was just not possible. Also good on slippery, muddy ground. At about 380g they are well worth carrying, and this year it looks as if there will be a lot of snow left.
