Another aspect of the challenge Hamish didn't forsee.

Despite the body work being totally out of shape I could until recently cope with the rigours of the challenge but when the engine began to fail alas The Challenge became a no go event. The engine specialist’s advice was, a valve is the major problem and should be replaced immediately plus a faulty fuel line requires re-routing to enhance performance to an acceptable output for bodywork’s age. Accepting the inevitable, all was placed in the skilled hands of the engineer and his vast team of support workers. A few too many teething problems arose during the initial testing programs which set the recovery period back considerably. For a while the biggest of these looked like it too would have to be replaced with one of those new-fangled electronic wonders used in a previous century by R. Bannister Esquire to break the four minute mile. Fortunately a tuning expert was on hand and able to tweak up the engine to required performance levels thus saving the nation the horrendous costs of above gadgetry. Following this the refurbished former wreck was dispatched homewards for some post- operative care and re-hab.
Where else but from among the environs of the challenge could you become friends with individuals from all walks of life over a period of over quarter a century who would, without you asking, and with the full support of their life partners put all their life’s on hold to travel distances greater than three challenge crossings to provide this essential support. This certainly is another spin-off from the challenge Hamish never envisaged way back in 1979-80.
I’ll never be able to repay these exceptionally kind people and the many others who provided moral support. Towards payment for all the help given I will endeavour through-out the rest of my life to provide what- ever support I can provide to those in need. It came as no surprise to me that, as in so many other aspects, it was from the ranks of the silent majority my helpers came and not from the at times over exuberant individuals who predominately frequent this message-board.
Sincere Harrfeldt Thanks.
