Digital mapping

Being an old fashioned sort of bloke I have only used map and paper and pencil to create my route maps in the past. Now I hear you can get access to digitial mapping and route card software by paying a small monthly fee rather than fork out a fortune for digital maps of the whole of Scotland, which are then not updated!

Do you recommend using these montly fee mapping services? What are their drawbacks? and, which is the best one?

Many thanks - I need to get cracking and create and submit my route. Planning Shiel Bridge to Balmedie visiting many remote Corbetts and Grahams enroute.

Simon.

Re: Digital mapping

You need the very good http://route.grough.co.uk which costs a small fee.

Other often overlooked online map http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/maps/

Enjoy planning.

Re: Digital mapping

Ordnance Survey Getamap
Although I use Anquet most of the time, I find the Ordnance Survey Getamap service reasonably priced, and useful when I want more detailed information as it gives 1:25,000 scale as well as 1:50,000 scale maps, though the route-planning isn't as sophisticated as Anquet. If all you want is an occasional look at 1:25,000 mapping, Getamap has a free, though basic, version.

Re: Digital mapping

I have used " antiquated " mapping like yourself since year dot; and since 2006 on my first start point, it works and is laborious. digital routing i am reading and observing. until 2008 i used Liverpool Library 25000/50000 maps hard copy! since then they are still closed for refurbishment and the maps are unavailable for Scotland still! your local library may not be. meanwhile i am buying/borrowing/memorising hardcopy.i am on a gap year of necessity and will be back. just to mention the low tec. alternative may still be there for you.

Re: Digital mapping

Many thanks Martin - Gough looks great!

Re: Digital mapping

Glad to help.

Re: Digital mapping

I would agree there.

I use QUO 2, but Grough Route is an excellent resource,
With extremely cheap monthly fees.

Top utility, and it goes down to 1:25000.
