Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

Old time challengers may smile at the lack of knowledge and naiviety of a first time challenger with limited Scottish experience.

I have sorted out the line of my route (I think). It is pretty straight forward and I am sure old timers might think it lacks challenge - but it will do for me!

At present the distances I want to walk each day give me some potential wild camps at places that on the map do not look that promising or suitable (because of either terrain or too near habitation), so any suggestions about the following will be gratefully received:

1. Loch Arkaig - I will be slogging along the road on the north side of the loch, heading for Spean Bridge. I could do with a spot about half way along. Have pencilled in somewhere in grid square 1091. But it doesn't look great! Any thoughts?

2. Linn of Dee - from the map it looks like there are plenty of possibilities between White Bridge and Linn of Dee. I wanted to get slightly further that day. What about Linn of Dee itself?

3. Glen Doll - was looking at grid square 2875? Would that be problematic?

I will be posing more idiotic questions for the entertainment of others in the coming days!

Sent you an email David

Re: Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

I also sent you an email.

All the best.

My sign out point is in 2014 hopefully.

Re: Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

Sorry you didn't get in Sandy.
BUT.. You can always come to the Cheese and Wine Parties...

Re: Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

The Cheese & Whine parties are in the middle of the middle of nowhereville. Have you looked at where they are planned!

Sorry, we are off Davids topic. Re: best place to camp.

Re: Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

Hi Sandy
(and I'm sorry too for hijacking David's thread..)
The Cheese & Wine Parties' locations were very carefully selected for their scenic qualities and for their "get away from it all" characters, for "get away from it all" characters.

Well, that didn't work last year, did it-gate-crashers fresh off the train....

I thought they were Event Management.

Re: Wild camping spots - advice for a newbievirgin.

Hi David
I can't comment on the other locations but as for Linn of Dee I know it well.
Mar Lodge just after Linn of Dee has in recent years been very welcoming to challengers. Including providing both bunk beds in the Stable block (hostel type accomodation) and allowing camping just outside the big house.
There has been in recent years meals supplied and coffee and biscuits around a big fire in the gun room making this a challenger haven and just the place a newbie would like.
I do believe that part of the reason they do this is that they would prefer that challengers (or hikers in general) do not wild camp along the banks of the Dee or in the imeddiate area of Linn of Dee as this area is already heavily affected by visitor numbers. (I definitely wouldn't feel like wild camping for that reason).
If you wish to wild camp I would suggest stopping at White Bridge or heading past Mar Lodge down to the Quoich.

Many thanks Colin, and to others who have responded - I have received a number of e maild direct. Challengers are clearly a helpful and freindly bunch - if off divided opinions sometimes in relation to answers to my questions. But all very helpful, so thanks again all.
