only drawback i have found is it doesnt calculate total elevation gain,

Don't assume that if you have already bought software like Anquet, Getamap is no use to you. If I want more detail than Anquet gives me at 1:50,000, I still find Getamap very useful as it can show 1:25,000, and often gives details such as footbridges that are missing from 1:50,000. (The map still might not be up to date, of course. I still wonder if there was a new bridge higher up above the over-the-knees raging torrent of a burn that I waded, east of Suileag bothy last year.)

I too use grough route and, although it often says it has lost contact with the server, it usually gets there in the end.

Incidentally Bing maps will show OS 1:25K maps (and 1:50k) and, especially in full screen mode (F11) will show a pretty large area.

This hi-tech planning is good for some - but for me I will be using

The best one is Highland Park it's a bit outside the Challenge area; but worth the diversion.

Kirkwall is a tad more than "a bit outside" Pete,you will have to get your feet wet for that visit!
