Those pictures are fantastic! Nice to see what it was like on the higher routes. I have the maps out now for my next(hopefully) crossing:-)

That was a lovely photo set. And a lovely crossing, too, by the looks of things. Quite a few places I've been on one crossing or another, interspersed with quite a few places I've thought about going. You're giving me ideas ...

On the question "where are the trees?" ... I once spent an interesting week on a course at the Civil Service College in Sunningdale. Also on the course was the chief tourism officer for the New Forest (who said he had been in post for 10 years, and he still hadn't figured out whether his remit was supposed to be to attract tourists or repel them ...). Anyway ... he explained that the word "forest" derives from the French "foret" (with a circumflex over the e), which means "hunting ground". Trees are strictly an optional extra ...
