Osprey Rucksacks.

Hi
I'm looking for first hand experience of the Osprey series of rucksacks and I have seen a few on this years challenge. I am looking at the Osprey Kestrel 58 or 68 rucksacks. These both come in S/M and M/L but my local shop doesn't stock them soI can't try them on, can anyone advise me on the fitting for a 5'3" male. Additionally any thoughts on similar alternatives.

Thanks

Colin

Re: Osprey Rucksacks.

I'm a big fan of Osprey rucksacks, after conversion from being a Karrimor carrier from the late 70s. I've an Aether 75, Exos 46 and Stratos 26. I used the Exos 46 for this crossing and it was briliant, although I ripped the stitching a little on the lid(see separate thread on 3 Cheers for Osprey about their customer service).

There is no substitute to visiting a store with a properly trained rucksack fitter; Osprey has a sizing gizmo that measures your back. I'm 6'1" tall but only carry a medium - it's to do with the length of your back between certain points, not your overall height.

Although I couldn't find an Exos 58 in the UK, you might consider that as an option, or the 46 and force yourself to carry a little less kit! I'm really chuffed with mine; IMHO it is a pack you wear rather than carry and that makes a big difference.

Best regards, Jules

Re: Osprey Rucksacks.

hi Colin , i recall you saying a new rucsac might be your next investment. i agree , Osprey look good however i do not have first hand experience . Although . Do you recall Frederics osprey ?, it looked part of him , as Jules says. my karrimor is pulling apart after only two trips! Good gear is an enjoyment so if you decide ok go for it. my main enjoyment of the challenge is selecting gear which i hope will work and all the time it takes. the 2 week trip is over all too quickly and only the people are there to extend the enjoyment. the weather is something else altogether !. ps my name has not appeared on the headings of this post i thought it was automatic recognition ! ? cheers , bill howden pps it is asking me to fill in the field ! here goes

Re: Osprey Rucksacks.

Contact Osprey and give them your back length from lower neck to bottom of your spine and they will suggest a correct fitting. If you mail order make it clear to the dealer that if the sack does not fit correctly that you will expect to have it exchanged foc (except postage) then you should be OK.
