Re: Re: Re: Re: transfer of 295th from Ft Sill 1969

Butch,

I can confirm that Maj. Rogers was the CO when the 295th arrived in Finthen. I was in country, at Hanau, and baby sitting two of the first CH-54's to arrive ahead of the company. I moved from Hanau to Finthen as soon as the 295th arrived.

I just found this site and I believe that we had a commander named Major Rogers at one time. I also remember a couple of accidents that we had while I was with the unit.

Butch,

I believe the unit commander was Leland P. Biggs followed by Ken Loveless, Jerry Varnon and then Tom Slye. The a/c tail numbers when I was there from 71 to 74 were:

18446

18448

18449

18451

18454

18455 (best aircraft, always brought me home!!)

18456

18457

18458

18461

The aircraft that crashed in 1970 was due to failure of pitch change link on tail rotor was 18452.

Keep up the great work on the website. You have a lot of Crane crewmembers now involved who can put together the pieces on the history of this great aircraft.

When I returned to Ft Sill in January i969 from a tour with the 355th AVN co (HH)in the RVN the 295th Avn Co was being readied for deployment to Germany. It deployed to Germany and was replaced by the activation of the 291st Avn Co (HH) which I commanded from November 70 to August 72. Prior to that the 295th had been the Mother Company that trained up the 273rd and 355th for deployment to RVN in 67&68. Just thought I would pass this along.

I arrive at Ft Sill in Late Nov 1969. Major Rogers was the CO. I remember when on of our solders, a man name Moreland was hit and killed by and drunk driver as he walked to town. He was walking because Major Rogers took his keys due to a mix up on his auto insurance. Major Rogers took the death very hard.
I went to Germany with the 295th. I was Discharged on the 10th of April 1970.

I am trying to contact a Terry Kyle who arrived at Ft Sill with me and went to Germany. If any one knows his wherabouts, please contact me. I need him to confirm with the VA that we were in the Hospital with hepatitis together at Ft Belvoir VA together.
