Re: Culvert under Ashton-in-Makerfield

Superb photos, aren't they? I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to go down there. The principal stream that flows through Ashton -Millingford Brook- emerges (as "Down Brook") at the base of Tatlock's Hillock near Billinge and eventually flows into the lake at Newton-le-Willows. You may be interested in the commentary below my close-up photo of Bridge Foot House on Flickr, where I speculate that the streams may have been culverted about the time a Local Board was created and given responsibility for Ashton's water (and gas)supply. In 2011 a big clean-up was undertaken by Aqua-Jet Specialist Drainage Contractors on behalf of the Environment Agency as the accumulated rubbish in the culvert was thought to present a flood risk.
