Re: Not in Ashton

Well yes we have, we've stayed in the Travelodge across from the George Elliot Hospital (they are on about closing the hospital) also stayed in Nuneaton, it's Coventry we have most conection with as the wife came from there and all her family still live in the area,( we was down at the beginning December for four days)

Next visit four days booked for the end of March staying in Coventry City centre, going to change the flowers for Mothering Sunday and see her family, been going down now for over 50 years

Re: Not in Ashton

I used to know Coventry very well. As a teenager the record shops there were the main draw for me, I expect they've all gone now. Most of my relatives are still in and around Hinckley -just the other side of the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border- which is where I actually grew up. Ashton reminds me of it in some ways - roughly the same size; a twice-weekly market; one main shopping street, on a slope. Any northern soul fans reading this may recall the allnighters at Hinckley Leisure Centre in the years after the Casino finished.

Re: Not in Ashton

I know these things are not about Ashton and maybe shouldn't be posted just let me know if not

Have a look at this Coventry site Clarkey

This photo was taken out of the Travelodge window showing you part of the new Broadgate as you can see there's been some big changes over the last few years

Re: Not in Ashton

I'd never have got the statue name or location Dougie although I have read a few of George Elliot's books.

Re: Not in Ashton

Thanks. You're right about the changes - I don't recognise anything in this pic apart from the Lady Godiva statue.
