I had a similar problem some years ago, John, in that I had care of a young lad at weekends who went to school elsewhere so didn't know any other children locally. What worked for us was enrolling him in the football academy at Ashton Leisure Centre. It's only for an hour on Saturday mornings but hopefully he'll make friends there who would agree to meet up at other times for a kickabout or whatever.
