Titanic

Lots of information about the Titanic being bantered about at the moment with the 100th Anniversary this week.

Ashton-in-Makerfield actually has a strong link with Captain Edward Smith who sank with Titanic.

Smith married a girl from Ashton. She was a farmers daughter called Sarah Eleanor Pennington. She was baptised at Winwick Parish on 25.7.1861 and later went on to marry the ill fated Captain Smith on 12.7.1887.

There were a few Pennington farmers in Ashton, Newton and Winwick. Her father was the farmer William Pennington. If anyone still living locally is related to him they may not know of their family links with Titanic.
