I think Julian's idea of asking local farmers is probably your safest bet Ian.

I know that wood pigeons are classed as vermin and no doubt several farmers would be glad to have you ridding them of their vermin. It could be a mutually beneficial situation for both you and the farmer.

There is a regular organised shoot at Rainford so it might be worth googling them.

Try contacting Baldwins Farm at Landgate they own and farm a lot of the land around Ashton not just the Landgate one.
