Hi Mark,
In case you have not already seen this...it gives details and a photo of the cemetery, but nothing much else.

Hi Mark -

There are war memorials in Wigan Road by Carnegie Drive and in St Thomas's churchyard.

Re: Re: 428355 Cpl Christopher Hurst MM 423 Field Company RE

I have just found this chaps papers on Ancestry.com.

He is shown as having been killed in action on the 16th November 1918! Does he appear on the local memorial?

He lived at 60 Brockstead Road North Ashton near Wigan, having been a colliery blacksmith before enlistment

Mark. There are at least two other sources of information which you could find in the History Shop in Wigan.
One is the minutes of council meetings of Ashton-in Makerfield UDC which are contained in a series of books and as in the case of my father who was awarded the MM in 1917 it will be described in the minutes plus my father was presented with an inscribed gold watch so your man might also have been given one.....Also the Wigan Observer is available in Microfiche and their will be a report in there as well...Its hard work but good luck!

Ray

Thank you for that.

What unit did your dad serve with?

I will visit the library at Wigan and search for my man.

Mark dad was with the Manchester Regiment.
He signed on at 17 yrs old like a lot of lads and he was shipped over to France before they found out his age when he had his rifle took off him,,,they then made him a stretcher bearer and banged him on the front line.
How he survived was a miracle.
