Gwlad to hear it, Ray. My grandad came from Bethesda to Ashton in 1902. I think he would have called where they lived in Bryn Road 'Gillacre', though his brother later lived in Stupshie. I was brought up closer to Town Green, opp the Cally.
There are a couple of good photos in the book 'Around Ashton in M and Golborne'...one of the opening of Carmel Chapel (now a furniture shop) and another of a Welsh group on an outing to Caernarfon.

Surely the greatest reminder of the Welsh community is Bryn Road itself, meaning "hill" in Welsh.
The only other Welsh words I know are "Dim Alan" meaning way out.
Whenever my wife sees that in Wales she says "they must know you!!!

Alan, I like the idea that my ancestors gave the name to Bryn Rd, But Bryn Rd simply means the road to Bryn Cross which existed many hundreds of years ago as the site of `the four footed cross` otherwise known as the Brynn cross,Brynn is a proment name in the history of the Gerard family .Hence,Brynn Gates and Brynn Hall.

Not wanting to gang up on you, Alan, but I think 'DIM Allan' means the opposite of what you said, i.e. NO exit. Just 'Allan' could be called 'way out' though.

In Ashton Dim Allan must mean just that. Anyway my paternal ancestors came up as miners from Cornwall and my maternal ancestors are from Ashton.
My mother was from the other end of Bryn Road from me and I remeber her telling me she remebered welsh being spoken in Ashton.
