Re: Cunliffes from North Ashton

Keith,
A quick look at the census records for 1881 and 1891 suggests that Bertha was the second wife of Miles, who is described as a coal mine labourer in the returns. In 1881 and 1891 his wife was given as Mary, and they had a daughter, Clara A., who was born about 1879. The census shows Miles as born in about 1849. By 1901, his wife is shown as Bertha, born in London, and his daughter is aged 22. There were several other Miles Cunliffes in and around the area, but this is the only one married to a Bertha.
Hopes this helps,
Phil

Re: Re: Cunliffes from North Ashton

Thanks for your helpful reply. My grandmother did live in London but came from Alsace (then part of France) as a Governmess to the the family of Gladys Cooper in Bromley and later the Gerard family. It is a pity that Hil;da Plant the Ashton lopcal historian has died. She knew the answers. It probably is the same person. M y motgher and sister had some information but they are both dead

Re: Cunliffes from North Ashton

www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk has two 1906 maps of Ashton. Sheet 101.08 shows east Ashton, and on the reverse is an account of Ashton and Edge Green, and other information including private and commercial residents of Ashton.

Miles Cunliffe is listed as a shopkeeper at 115 Bolton Road, and several other Cunliffes were shopkeepers in Ashton at this time.
