Footpath, Three Sisters to the canal and Wigan flashes

Update to the thread regarding the footpath from the Three Sisters at Landgate Lane/Bryn gates Lane to the canal and Bamfurlong. This footpath appears on the Ordnance Survey map “Explorer series sheet 276 map ref SD 58577 01729” and is now identified at this point with a Way maker sign (the familiar yellow black disc with path direction arrow). The path was recently walked by the Assistant Rights of Way officer from Wigan MBC and by myself, the officer confirmed that the footpath appears on the OS map and is also clearly marked on the definitive map of Wigan.

Currently there are no access stiles at the two gates near to the start point quoted above, however, should the gates be closed; there is access to the right of the gates over the fence which has been lowered for this purpose. The first gate is usually open but the second gate is permanently fastened so please go around the right hand side of the gate.

The path is made up with red shale and is used by the land owner for access to his private lake and by the farmer to gain access to the fields. Follow the path until you are near to the lake but do not go to the lake this is private land, the path bears right approximately 50 metres from the lake, follow the path for approximately 40 meters to the five bared gate (there is a stile to the left of the gate). Follow this path over the fields until you come to a wooded area, at this point the footpath to the canal will be on your left, the main path continues to Bamfurlong where it joins the A58 at Lilly Lane (between the bungalows near to the School). Turn left at the canal to walk to the flashes; don’t turn right the way is blocked by the main west coast railway line.
