Gustavus Hillock, Ashton

Here I am again with another question about old addresses in Ashton.
I have relatives living at Gustavus Hillock in 1871 - district of Holy Trinity in Ashton. It is transcribed on the 1871 census as 'Gustavious Hillock' but a net search leads me to think that it was in fact Gustavus Hillock.
On the same page of the census is an Independant Methodist Church, which makes me think it might have been a previous name for Spindle Hillock...?
Any clues anyone?
Thanks,
Lisa.

Re: Gustavus Hillock, Ashton

Me again,
answering my own question really.
I have found Gustavus Hillock, it's the site of Holy Trinity church.
Not a million miles away from Spindle Hillock after all...
Lisa.

Re: Re: Gustavus Hillock, Ashton

As a matter of interest, where did you find the reference to it?

I've just asked a relative who's in her eighties and lived at Billinge and Simms Lane End at one time. She says that when she was young there were some back-to-back houses between the church and Booths Brow Road. She knew them as being in Pig Street, but hadn't heard the name Gustavus Hillock.

Have a look at this site and enter the co-ordinates
on the left hand side and then press search,. Tha map date should be 1849. You may have to zoom in to the map to see Gustavus Hillock (select "1" next to the magnifying glass).

coordinates 355718,400494

Any trouble finding it please let me know.

Thanks Ian - it's set out clearly on that map. And the location is where I thought it was. I wonder how many local people know the name!

Re: Gustavus Hillock, Ashton

Hi
Holy Trinity Church is built on Gustav Hillock, the foundation stone was laid Oct 1837. It was previously to be in Archer Lane, but a gift of the land on Gustav Hillock meant it was in its presnt location.

The sandstone used is interesting, very different from St Thomas. It can be both hard and soft stone in the same piece. the origin is uncerain, what is pretty sure it did not come from Billinge Hill.

Holy Trinity is the parish church for Ashton, not St Thomas as is often thought. It was originally a Church of ease for Winwick parish.

Another interesting fact is since it was concecrated there have only been seven rectors incumbent at the church.
