Three Sisters

A friend of mine recently wrote to me ...." Circa 1970, there was a terrific detailed model of this entire area in the Geology Museum in South Kensington. It was part of an exhibition called 'The Wigan Alps': a grand 1960s scheme to landscape ski slopes etc out of Three Sisters and surrounding waste heaps, Sadly only more modest development ensued. I had always assumed that they would eventually have given the model to a local museum, library or college: it seemed not the sort of thing to merely destroy after the exhibition! ..."

Wouldn't it be nice if this model could be tracked down for the ranger's office. Maybe your connections in WMBC could try? Maybe even suitable for the proposed "information panel/noticeboard".

Incidentally, I note in the minutes, of a right of way from Landgate Lane to the canal being confirmed, supposedly adjacent to the footpath from the Three Sisters. Can you elaborate on this footpath since I am unable to locate such a path on maps of 1800s, 1900s or present day other than the Park House Farm path at present and a path from half way along Bryn Gates Lane in the 1800s and early 1900s.

PS does anyone have pics of Bryn Hall Pit (not Garswood Hall.

Keep up the good work. Oh, how about publicising the quiet days when no noise is being made from the race circuit. I personally would rather the circuit was closed completely and the area turned over to locals for local activities. Any monies foregone could surely be recouped by re-opening some kind of golf facility. Who knows, maybe even a ski slope.

Many Thanks

Regards
Tony Prescott

Re: Three Sisters

If Im not mistaken I think there used to be a golf course of some kind over in that area.
A family Pitch and Putt area would be great.

I like to walk around the lake area and the bird sanctuary , until I find my self shouting to my family just to be heard over the noise of the bikes.

Do they make ear-muffs for ducks?? (rings patent office)

Re: Re: Three Sisters

There was a golf course on the site at one time. It was known as the 'Golf Links', although not strictly correct usage of that term. It closed in the early 60s when the area was earmarked for redevelopment, and the golf club eventually moved to the former New Garswood Hall grounds, near Ashton Cross. The spongy turf of the original Bryn Road course was still in evidence until the modern Three Sisters development started.

Re: Three Sisters Footpath to Canal

The footpath you mention does go from Landgate Lane to the canal. If you go from the railway bridge, towards Landgate, it is about about 100 yards or so on the right.

Re: Three Sisters Footpath to Canal

Hi Ian -

The footpath discussed at the meeting isn't the one north of the railway bridge. It is one running from Landgate Lane about 100 metres SOUTH of the exit from Three Sisters, east towards the canal. Near to the exit on the bridle path, there is a footpath which veers to the right following Park Brook, which comes out at Bryn Hall Farm. I understand that the footpath referred to is a continuation of this, running by the side of a house by Park Brook Bridge, and gives a more direct route to the canal than the one you're referring to.
